The English champions, then, could find themselves three points behind their bitter rivals by the time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team arrive on Merseyside this weekend.
United are scheduled to take on Burnley at Turf Moor tonight. A win for the visitors would take them to 36 points from 17 league matches – three points clear of Liverpool.
As a result, having dropped points against West Brom, Newcastle and Southampton in their previous three matches, the Reds will look to conjure up an emphatic response against their closest challengers so far.
However, the refereeing appointment isn’t exactly a good omen for Jurgen Klopp and his players. Tierney has been appointed to officiate while Stuart Attwell will be on VAR duties.

Tierney, 40, has a favourable record towards Manchester United when it comes to penalties this season. The Wigan-born official has awarded five penalties to Solskjaer’s team in his previous 10 matches officiating them, after all.
Meanwhile, in the 14 fixtures he has overseen with Liverpool, Tierney has failed to award a spot-kick to the Reds on one singular occasion.
As such, unsurprisingly, Tierney’s appointment hasn’t been met with much optimism from the red half of Merseyside.
