Martin Keown urges Liverpool to sign Jannik Vestergaard

Martin Keown has urged Jurgen Klopp to make a move for Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard. The Arsenal legend suggested so while on talkSPORT (11:41 am, January 8, 2021).

Keown has been hugely impressed with the imposing Southampton this season and believes he would be a good signing for Liverpool.

Vestergaard, 28, has been one of the Premier League’s outstanding centre-halves this term, after all. He has played a pivotal role for the Saints, who are level on points with Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton.

As a result, Keown believes the 6ft 6in Danish international would be an ideal candidate to solve Liverpool’s defensive issues. The Reds are without their three first-choice centre-backs, after all.

Speaking on talkSPORT (11:41 am, January 8, 2021), Keown said: I was looking at Vestergaard playing for Southampton, and I will say this on record. I have not seen a better central defender this season, and I looked at his contract situation.

“I am not trying to cause a problem for Southampton, and I thought that maybe that would be a player that Jurgen Klopp would go after. He has been brilliant this season. He is injured at the moment.”

What RTK has to say – Should Liverpool look to Vestergaard?

This is certainly a transfer we can all get behind.

Not only has Vestergaard been one of the best defenders in the league this term, but his contract at St Mary’s is due to expire next year.

As a result, if Southampton were to sell, they would be more inclined to do so sooner rather than later if they hope to secure maximum value.

Vestergaard certainly ticks a lot of boxes for Klopp. He’s a talented player, for one, currently operating at the peak of his powers.

Also, he has enough Premier League experience to make an immediate impact, too. At 28, there is every reason he could stay at the top for the next five to six years.

The million-dollar question, however, is would Southampton be willing to give up their star defender? It seems unlikely given how much Liverpool profited off the club following the signing of Van Dijk, after all.

Still, Keown’s comments are interesting and it could get the ball rolling in terms of speculation, too.

In terms of Van Dijk alternatives, there is no-one better suited in the PL than Vestergaard.

According to WhoScored, he is as the most influential defender in the English top-flight this season.

With that said, Liverpool would be wise to at least keep Vestegaard under consideration.
