Klopp could make Alaba deal happen if he chooses; Thiago deal proves so

Liverpool are prepared to battle Real Madrid for the signing of David Alaba, according to reports. The Guardian claim that Jurgen Klopp is ‘pushing hard’ to make it happen.

The report has similarities to that of another deal Liverpool recently got over the line. We are talking about Thiago, of course. The Spaniard played alongside Alaba at Bayern Munich last season.

One of the striking comparisons between the two deals is age. If Alaba does join the Reds next summer, he will arrive at the age of 29 – the same as when Thiago joined.

With that said, Liverpool tend to avoid offering lucrative deals to players in their thirties. However, as showcased with Thiago [£20 million], it demonstrates exceptions can be made.

Also, it highlights the power and influence Jurgen Klopp has on the players he wants to bring to Anfield. It was the Liverpool boss who had the definitive say on why the club should break their transfer policy to sign Thiago, after all.

Will lightning strike twice with Klopp and Alaba?

It represents Liverpool’s continuing evolvement as a club. The Reds are back in the elite bracket of the market and Klopp has looked to capitalise on that, for the right player.

Signing Thiago would have been impossible only a couple of years ago. Liverpool’s changing status has enabled the club to finally flex their muscles further.

And why stop there? If Liverpool are indeed able to sign Alaba, they absolutely should. His versatility alone makes him a perfect candidate. Also, another serial winner amongst Klopp’s ranks would be welcomed, too.

The key behind any potential deal here is undoubtedly Klopp. He proved with Thiago he can influence the board as his track record with signings speaks for itself.

As a result, we could see Klopp do the same for Alaba. He could sign on a Bosman deal, after all. His contract at Bayern Munich will expire at the end of the season.

The case in point here is that Klopp could influence a move if he chooses to. There certainly are a lot of pros to signing Alaba and the Liverpool boss knows that better than anyone.

If a deal is worth pursuing then Klopp will make it so the board put Liverpool’s hat in the ring. If not, then the club’s transfer record is a cause to trust whatever decision regarding Alaba is reached.
