Liverpool suffered only their second league defeat of the season at St Mary’s in the Premier League last night. Danny Ings scored the only goal of the game.
In truth, it was an abysmal performance by Liverpool’s high standards. Jurgen Klopp’s team had just one shot on target despite 56 touches in the opposition’s box.
So, having scored in their first 15 league games of the season, Liverpool have drawn a blank in their last two.
Liverpool remain top of the Premier League table with 33 points from 17 matches. Meanwhile, Manchester United are level on points with the Reds having played a game less, as a result.
Also, Manchester City are fifth but have picked up 29 points from 15 matches, while Tottenham Hotspur have 29 points from 16 games.
Liverpool won the league at a canter last season, however, it seems Klopp and his players are braced for a tougher challenge this time around.
Linker and Ferdinand respond
Former England striker Linker and United icon Ferdinand have given their take on Liverpool’s first defeat of 2021.
It’s fair to say, 2021 has started with a resounding warning for Liverpool
The form of champions? Far from it. Liverpool still remain at the summit, but City and United will both overtake them if they win their games in hand.
And if that wasn’t alarming enough to sharpen the senses, United are the next visitors to Anfield as well.
