2021 could see the formation of arguably the most surprising partnership of the season. The two players in question are Thiago Alcantara and Georginio Wijnaldum.
It’s one that would have seemed impossible only a few months ago. Both Liverpool players were part of the two highest speculated transfer sagas last summer, after all.
There was even a time where Thiago could only join Liverpool if Wijnaldum went the other way.
In the end, however, a once improbable scenario was able to unfold. Thiago, of course, joined while Wijnaldum remained a Liverpool player.
Four months into the 2020/21 season, the pair are still yet to start together. This is largely down to the recent injury of Thiago. He has played just once since October 17, in fact. That came against Newcastle United on Wednesday in the form of a 17-minute cameo off the bench.

Everyone wants Thiago back in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI because he’s a superstar that we’ve barely seen. He’s played just over 150 minutes since his £20 million [BBC] arrival.
As such, when fit, there is no question that the Spaniard is a guaranteed starter. He is Liverpool’s biggest signing of the modern era, after all. Jordan Henderson is also an undroppable figure, freeing up just one more position in Klopp’s midfield triumvirate.
Because of Fabinho’s transition into defence, that final spot will likely go to Wijnaldum. Other than Andy Robertson and Roberto Firmino, he is Klopp’s most utilised player this term.
This could see a partnership unfold between Thiago and Wijnaldum, then.
Thiago/Wijnaldum partnership pending
Injuries this season have taken away solidity in the team – something Wijnaldum has helped combat.
The £25 million [BBC] man’s versatility, coupled with his experience, makes Wijnaldum invaluable to Liverpool right now.
Partnered alongside former Barcelona maestro could elevate his game even further. Thiago and Wijnaldum could be paired together as early as Monday against Southampton.
Thiago changed the game when he came back against Newcastle and supporters will be calling for his involvement again.
You could immediately see the quality he injects and the effect Thiago will have once at his best. After all, he’s unlike any other midfielder at the club and, really, unlike nearly everyone on the planet.
Thiago is a truly world-class player and alongside Wijnaldum, the two could be special together. Because on the back of the last two results, Liverpool could really benefit of some newly-inspired creativity in midfield.
