Diogo Jota opens up on his Liverpool injury progress

Diogo Jota has delighted Liverpool supporters as he confirmed that he has nearly made it back from injury now.

Jota, 24, has been missing with a knee injury for Liverpool’s previous five league matches, but was quoted about an imminent return by The Mail.

And the Portugal international has now confirmed that he is determined to work harder to become “a big influence.”

Jota is quoted in the Daily Mail as saying: “Knee injuries are always complicated so we cannot rush things, but I am doing well and I will be back on the field as soon as possible.

“When I’m fit I know I’ll give my best in each training session to give myself a chance of playing.

“In Portugal they used to say the hardest thing is not to arrive but to stay there. So that of course is my target.

“Now that I have achieved a move to Liverpool I want to be a big influence in this club and that’s what I try to do every day.'”

What RTK has to say

We agree all round, really. Jota’s return cannot come soon enough for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.

Since his £41 million [BBC] arrival and subsequent explosion onto the scene, Liverpool’s goalscoring prowess has never looked better. Without him, the struggles are there to see.

Indeed, he will return soon. The Athletic have indicated he could be back this month.

It was telling how much of a miss Jota was in Liverpool’s final match of 2020. Even off the bench, his recent incisiveness and clincal edge up-top would have added something that was lacking from the front-three.

The 23-year-old’s biggest strength right now is that everything he does seems to work out. He’s scoring all types of goals, from several different positions, and is absolutely thriving.

Jota has nine goals already this season, with eight of those coming in his last eight games. It’s an extraordinary run and the real question will be how long he can keep it up.

Right now, however, Liverpool have to find a way to cope without their £41 million signing from Wolves. It’s a wave we just have ride without the Portuguese superstar in the coming weeks.
