Report: Paul Joyce provides positive Joe Gomez update

Joe Gomez is reportedly on the comeback trail. The Liverpool defender is making positive strides in his recovery from a knee injury.

That’s according to Paul Joyce of The Times, anyway, who claims Gomez is currently training away from Liverpool, although he has not gone abroad.

It’s the first real evidence we’ve seen of Gomez’s progress since he sustained a serious knee injury while on England international duty back in November.

So, Gomez is seemingly making early strides in his return to fitness.

The 23-year-old suffered a bad one while training with England. Knee surgery was the result, with an unknown return date.

And with Gomez set to miss a significant chunk of the season, we’ve heard nothing of his rehabilitation process since.

There has been plenty of footage and updates regarding the fitness of his central defensive counterpart Virgil van Dijk, who also sustained a long-term knee injury.

The Dutchman has been seen at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre working hard in the gym having been out of action since October 17.

Joyce also reported that Van Dijk recently headed to Dubai for the next phase of his rehabilitation from a cruciate knee ligament injury.

According to The Times, it is not unusual for Liverpool to send players who are facing lengthy spells on the sidelines abroad for a change of scenery and warm weather training.

This seems to be the case with Gomez, who has chosen to remain in the country.

What RTK has to say

Although Gomez’s most recent update isn’t exactly groundbreaking, any news is better than no news at this stage, after all.

It’s important, though, that supporters are kept in the loop to gage a better understanding of the process required before the player can return to action.

Another important factor, also, is that Gomez has been through a severe knee injury before – even worse than this.

But he came back from that and became a World, European and English champion. His strong mindset has been significant in his recovery.

Gomez knows what it takes to bounce back. He knows the setbacks, he knows the road and he knows he can recover.

Mentally, this will make the process of recovery easier to him. But it should inject fans with confidence, too.

We know Gomez has what it takes to recover from this kind of injury as the same player. He did it once and he’ll certainly do it again.

Hopefully, this latest update reassures supporters that he won’t be out for too long. But when he’s back, we can expect the same exceptional player from before.
