Liverpool can still repeat Minamino 'trick' with Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai has completed a move from RB Salzburg to RB Leipzig having signed a contract with the Bundesliga giants until 2025.

Liverpool were reportedly in the running to sign the 20-year-old but instead, Szoboszlai has chosen to make the transition from Salzburg to Red Bull’s parent club Leipzig.

This can still work in Liverpool’s favour as it could enable them to repeat a trick from last season.

Takumi Minamino really impressed against the English champions last term. He certainly looked good to us – we even wrote a piece urging the Reds to keep a keen eye on him following his performance at Anfield over a year ago.

Before 2019 was completed, Liverpool were in advanced talks to sign the Japanese international from Salzburg in a £7.25 million deal.

One of the fundamental reasons behind the Reds sanctioning a deal was as a result of the first-hand impression Minimino made during those two games against Liverpool, as per The Guardian.

Those two fixtures enabled Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to establish the upper hand. The Reds knew how good Minamino was and were able to effectivley complete their scouting process over two games.

The same could be done again in the case of Szoboszlai.

According to 90min, Liverpool had previously expressed an interest to sign the 12-time Hungary international.

And much like Minamino, Szoboszlai is a player the Reds will likely see up close in 2021.

Liverpool were recently drawn this week to face RB Leipzig in the last-16 of the Champions League knockout stages next February.

Despite representing Salzburg in the competition already, Szoboszlai will be able to feature if Leipzig include their new signing in their updated Champions League squad next year.

From a statistical outlook, he is certainly a player worth keeping an eye on.

This season, he has already clocked up 21 appearances for the Austrian outfit scoring nine goals while registering 10 assists.

Last season he raked in an impressive tally of 12 goals and 18 assists, as per transfermarkt.

At the age of 20, Szoboszlai is a huge talent, and has written his name in lights on the European scene with two goals in six Champions League matches this season.

He is ridiculously gifted on the ball and could cost less than a quarter of the price being touted for either Jadon Sancho or Kylian Mbappe.

Given Liverpool’s working relationship with the Red Bull franchise, it represents a more viable transfer route to take given the success the club have had with former Salzburg alumni’s Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino.

One of the reasons why Liverpool are yet to make their interest known in Szoboszlai is partially due to a lack of scouting. There’s plenty of unknown still about him that the Reds will be desperate to uncover.

But Liverpool can still get one up on any European rivals who may come back further down the line looking to strike a deal.

Both knockout fixtures effectively grant the Reds the opportunity to lay the groundwork similarly to how they did with Minamino.

It’s a tantalising Champions League encounter between two teams who both have ambitions of reaching the latter stages of the competition.

If Szoboszlai is indeed to feature, then much like Minamino in 2019, Liverpool will be watching with a keen eye.
