It seems as if Liverpool may have to identify other potential defensive targets to RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano.
According to The Athletic, Bayern Munich are in pole position to sign the Frenchman.
Despite this, the Sunday World reports that Liverpool remain firmly in the hunt for a centre back in the January window.
Here is a look at alternatives that could be on Jurgen Klopp’s shortlist.
Liverpool continue to be persistently linked with Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White.

White, 23, was reported to be on Liverpool’s shortlist earlier this week by the Sunday World, with interest dating back to the summer.
He signed a contract extension with Brighton until 2024 but reportedly could be made available if the price is right. White is valued by the club at around £50 million.
The former Leeds United loanee has clocked up 12 Premier League appearances this season and would represent a long-term investment and potential partner to Joe Gomez further down the line.
The ECHO linked Liverpool with a move for Ajax defender Perr Schuurs as recently as this month.
Schuurs impressed in both of the Champions League Group Stage matches against the Reds earlier this season. He has been identified as a potential successor to Matthijs de Ligt.
A mid-season deal could be struck following Ajax’s elimination from the Champions League, but he could be a more realistic option next summer.
Against Liverpool, he enjoyed a particularly fascinating duel with Sadio Mane.
Schuurs was extremely impressive from a statistical outlook. In total, he made three tackles, one interception and five clearences, as per WhoScored.
He was just effective on the ball, with Schuurs clocking up 83 touches – which was more than any Liverpool player on the night.
According to The ECHO, Schuurs is a cheaper and younger option to White, with Ajax reportedly valuing the 6ft 3in centre back at £27 million.
Upamecano’s centre-back partner and RB Leipzing teammate Ibrahima Konate has also been touted with an Anfield interest, as per Bild.
Similarly to Upamecano, Konate is French and is considered as a future international.
Signing the 21-year-old could be tricky amid reports that Bayern are likely to land Upamecano, as Leipzig will have reservations about losing two centre-backs in the same transfer window.
According to SportBild, the France U21’s international has a €50 million (£45 million) release clause in his contract with Leipzig.
He was particularly impressive against Manchester United, and at just 21, has the physical traits to be a top centre back.
At a towering 6ft 4in, Konate is dominant in the air and is also is blessed with blistering recovery pace.
The Athletic recently reported that Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer was also among a list of potential targets Klopp could look to as cover.
Bremer, 23, is currently in his third season with Torino having started his professional career with Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil after spending time on loan at Sao Paulo as a youngster.
According to reports in Italy, Bremer was monitored by Everton in the previous summer window. Fulham also maintain an interest in the player.
He currently has three years remaining on his contract at the Olympic Grande Torino Stadium.
Bremer is a great reader of the game and aggressive in stepping up to intercept the ball, averaging 2.4 interceptions per game, as per WhoScored.
He’s also a strong tackler, averaging 1.1 tackles per game, and similarly to Liverpool’s purchase of Kostas Tsimikas, is a target relatively unknown to the rest of Europe.
