According to 90min, Liverpool are among a host of Premier League clubs interested in signing RB Salzburg star Dominik Szoboszlai.
Szoboszlai, 20, has been watched by the Premier League champions in November with Tottenham and Everton also touted with an interest in the Hungarian international.
After inspiring club-side Salzburg to another Austrian Bundesliga title last term with 12 goals and 18 assists, Szoboszlai has sensationally gone up a gear in 2020/21.
Having begun the new campaign with a pre-season clash against Liverpool, Szoboszlai has already clocked up five goals and nine assists in just 13 matches for Salzburg this season.
Szoboszlai was one of the star players for his club-side during the thrilling 6-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich earlier this month. He also scored at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium during a 3-2 loss with Atletico Madrid.
However, it was Szoboszlai’s heroics for his national side that have proven his success story of the season so far after he secured Hungary’s place at Euro 2021 with a stunning last-gasp winner following an historic comeback against Iceland last week.
Despite being just 20-years-old, Szoboszlai has already become the poster boy for his national team and such moments of match-winning quality have made his £23 million release clause at Salzburg appear to look like small change.
Arsenal have previously showcased an interest in the Budapest-born talisman, although a move failed to materialise in the summer. Mikel Arteta’s team now face competition from Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton, Wolves and Leicester for Szoboszlai’s signature.
European heavyweights such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich also remain heavily interested.
Renowned for his goalscoring ability and his pin-point delivery from set-pieces, it is only a matter of time before Szoboszlai follows in the footsteps of Liverpool stars such as Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino in becoming another successful byproduct of Salzburg’s outstanding development system.
Liverpool have been here before
Liverpool have proven themselves a standout beneficiary of potential hidden gems in uncharted areas of the footballing pyramid.
Szoboszlai has come up against the Reds before during Liverpool’s stunning 4-3 thriller at Anfield in last season’s Champions League before being beaten 2-0 in the final group game at home.
Hungarian outlet Rangado reported that Klopp after the match interrupted Szoboszlai’s interview in the Red Bull Arena corridor to congratulate him on his performance.
He also featured against the Reds recently during Salzburg’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool following the Reds’ two-week pre-season camp in Austria.
Given the club’s relationship with Red Bull, there is no reason to assume that if Liverpool were to make their interest concrete in the future that it couldn’t give Jurgen Klopp and the Reds an edge in ensuring Szobozlai’s next footballing destination is indeed Anfield.
What RTK has to say
With a release clause of just £23 million, Szoboszlai represents a viable option for the club when you consider determining factors such as plausibility and price.
Liverpool have already reaped the benefits this season from investing heavily in an up-and-coming forward talent in the form of Diogo Jota, who has been in sensational form since his move from Wolves.
Also considering Salzburg’s development model and style of play, Szoboszlai would already fit the mould and possess the characteristics of a typical Klopp player.
It could represent a shrewd acquisition for the Premier League champions.
