Two of Liverpool’s reported central defensive targets were in Champions League action this week with Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig and Jules Kounde of Sevilla both touted to be of interest to the Premier League champions – and Reds supporters have reacted to their performances on Twitter.
Upamecano, 21, was powerless to prevent Leipzig drowning in a flood of goals as the Bundesliga leaders were put to the sword by Manchester United in a 5-0 defeat.
However, while Upamecano fell under severe media scrutiny which included a gruelling analysis from BT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand, another potential Virgil van Dijk replacement was enhancing his credentials following another hard-fought clean sheet in Europe.
According to 90Min, Sevilla centre back Kounde is one of a selected few who has made the five-man shortlist of potential January transfer targets.
One glaringly obvious barrier in a deal potentially materialising for the 21-year-old talent is his eye-watering £70 million price-tag, which makes him a much more expensive option than other reported targets such as Mykola Matviyenko, Pau Torres or even Upamecano himself.

Despite the gargantuan fee, Kounde, who is partnered by previously linked Liverpool target Diego Carlos, has been a pivotal figure in Julien Lopetegui’s well-drilled team that recently were crowned Europa League champions.
Key determining factors that usually have to be met before a deal can be struck by Liverpool typically are dictated by variables such as plausibility and price.
Kounde is a supremely gifted young defender blessed with superb positional sense and is exceptionally dominant in the air, which more than makes him a viable candidate. His technique in his long-range passes also have drawn similarities to Van Dijk himself, which is another ball in the Frenchman’s court.
He was absolutely faultless again in Sevilla’s 1-0 victory against Rennes on Wednesday night as the Spanish outfit made it back-to-back clean sheets in Europe to move joint-top of Group E with Chelsea.
According to Opta powered site WhoScored, he finished the match with one tackle, one interception, one clearance as well as winning six of his aerial duels.
Upamecano may be the top-priority central defensive target for a large section of Liverpool supporters, however, Kounde is showcasing he is an option that shouldn’t be dismissed too easily.
Here is a selection of responses from Liverpool supporters urging the club to make a move for the France under-21’s international…
Upamecano failing the United test, bring me Kounde please @LFC

I think with Van Dijk and Matip turning 30 next year we should go for a young talent who could be a key part of the post-klopp generation and could also do a job already. Upamecano is the obvious choice but probably too expensive.. Kounde maybe?

I think we’ll end up getting Kounde. Before we signed VVD our targets we’re VVD and Laporte. We got VVD and City got Laporte. They were after Kounde but didn’t wanna pay the price like for VVD
