Rhys Williams sends touching message to supporters following Liverpool defeat

Rhys Williams produced another stunning performance following Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal on penalties.

The 19-year-old made only his second senior start for Liverpool just seven days after his club debut against Lincoln City.

He was totally outstanding alongside Virgil van Dijk and then Joe Gomez in defence, dominant in the air while ice-cool in possession.

It was quite a statement from Jurgen Klopp to throw Williams in at the deep end against an in-form Arsenal team, yet the teenager rose to the occasion and gave Liverpool supporters plenty to be excited about regarding the club’s future defensive prospects.

Williams was imperious at the back and made a number of crucial blocks and interceptions to help Liverpool register a clean sheet.

It was cruel to see Williams on the losing side given that Liverpool were the dominant team on the ball and enjoyed the best chances on the night.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Despite the defeat, it was still a night to remember for Williams who made his first-ever senior appearance under the famous Anfield lights. He sent a touching message to supporters after the game.

This was a real performance of intent from Williams who seems to have really benefited from his time in National League North with Kidderminster Harriers last season.

This game was a much tougher test to his inaugural senior bout at Sincil Bank last week and despite playing against one of the Premier League’s biggest teams, Williams rose to the challenge and snatched his opportunity with confidence.

Williams made four clearences, two interceptions and won six of his defensive aerial duels – more than any other player for either Liverpool or Arsenal.

Teammates James Milner and Marko Grujic also sent messages on social media after the match.

Liverpool will now turn their attention back to Premier League duties as they look ahead to their away clash with Aston Villa on Sunday.

It will certainly be a tough fixture for Klopp and his team given Villa, like Liverpool, head into the game with a 100 per cent record in the English top-flight this season.
