Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius will join Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin on a season-long loan deal next week following reports from German publication Kicker as well as reputable Liverpool journalist James Pearce.

Karius, 27, has been involved with the Liverpool senior squad since he rejoined his Reds teammates during their pre-season tour of Austria following a two-year loan spell with Besiktas.

According to Goal, Liverpool had been looking to cash in on the former Mainz shot-stopper who has yet to feature for the Reds since the Champions League final in 2018.

The report claimed that Liverpool had hoped to claim a fee for the German but with the window due to close a week on Monday, the club have instead opted to allow Karius to leave on loan.

Jurgen Klopp has maintained he intends to keep goalkeeper Adrian as the club’s preferred second-choice option to Alisson Becker. The Spaniard started and put in a commanding performance against Lincoln City on Thursday during Liverpool’s 7-2 victory in the Carabao Cup.

Adrian’s contract, however, is due to expire in 2021 which could suggest that Liverpool may be looking to loan out Karius this season with the possibility that he could potentially become the back-up option to Alisson in the 2021/22 campaign.

A return to the Bundesliga could do Karius a world of good and a sustained run in the first team without the media spotlight at Liverpool could see him regain some confidence to potentially revive his Reds career in 2021.

He clocked up 25 appearances in the Turkish top-flight last season during his second year at Vodaphone Park but saw his contract terminated with Besiktas which saw Karius return to Liverpool early than expected.

Liverpool had originally hoped to cash in on Karius this summer, but due to the financial ramifications following the pandemic, any hopes of the club sanctioning a fee appeared unlikely given his track record over the previous three seasons.

Instead, Liverpool could hope to benefit from a revival in form from Karius before implementing him as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper next season.

Karius hasn’t played in the Bundesliga since he departed Mainz to join the Reds in 2016. He previously was one the books at Manchester City.

This is certainly a prospect that a number of Liverpool supporters would hope to see with Adrian’s contractual situation suggesting he is likely to leave the club at the end of the season.

A number of Kopites have reacted on social media to reports that Karius is heading back to his native Germany on loan, and many feel it could be a perfect opportunity for the goalkeeper to rediscover his confidence before settling into a role with Liverpool as Alisson’s back-up next season.
