Former Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno could miss the entirity of the 2020/21 La Liga season after sustaining a serious knee injury during pre-season.
Moreno, 28, was forced to withdraw during Villarreal’s friendly clash with Tenerife and reports from Spanish publication Macra indicate Moreno will have to undergo surgery following anterior cruciate ligament damage.
The Spanish international has since undergone surgery which according to Moreno ‘has gone well’ and the former Sevilla defender will now focus on the next stages of his recovery.
Moreno provided an injury update for supporters on Instagram and promised to fans that he will ‘come back stronger than ever’ once the rehabilitation process ends which is set to be well until the end of the 2020/21 season.

His caption read: “Hi all!! As you know yesterday I was operated on for the anterior cruciate ligament of my left leg in Barcelona by Dr. Cugat.
“Everything has gone well, and I no longer think about anything other than working, recovering, and coming back stronger than ever. Greetings to all and thank you very much for the messages of encouragement and support.”
Moreno received an outpour of responses from fans and former players including Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino and Andy Robertson.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who played alongside Moreno during the 2014/15 campaign also sent the Spaniard a touching message while close-friend and former Reds teammate Philippe Coutinho also responded.
Moreno enjoyed a five-year spell with Liverpool from 2014 to 2019 and clocked up 141 appearances under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.
His only piece of silverware at Anfield proved to be the biggest trophy in club football after Moreno was part of the Liverpool squad that triumphed in the Champions League last year before moving to Spain.
Moreno started 17 La Liga games in 2019/20 as Villarreal secured a Europa League spot under former manager Javi Calleja.
Former Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain head coach Unai Emery is now at the helm and could deploy Javier Ontiveros or Xavier Quintilla at left-back in the absence of Moreno ahead of this season’s La Liga campaign which is due to begin this weekend.
