According to reports from The Mail, Leeds United are ready to return to the transfer table as Marcelo Bielsa eyes a move for Barcelona midfielder Rafinha.
Rafinha, 27, is the younger brother of persistently linked Liverpool target Thiago who has also been touted with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks.
Leeds are looking to bolster their options ahead of the club’s first English top-flight campaign in 16 years and Rafinha is a player who has impressed Argentinean boss Bielsa.
The Yorkshire based outfit recently smashed their club-record transfer fee to land Spanish international Rodrigo from Valencia for a reported fee of £35 million [Mail], Sport report that Leeds are now turning their attention to Barcelona academy graduate Rafinha.
Rafinha spent last season on loan with Celta Vigo and is currently valued by Barcelona to be worth in the region of £14 million.
Celta Vigo originally had first dibs on the La Masia beneficiary but the La Liga club have hesitated on the price which has opened the door for Leeds to swoop and launch a bid.
Everton were also recently touted as a club also interested in securing the talents of Rafinha after reports from Sport indicated Carlo Ancelotti was interested in a deal after Barcelona made it clear that Rafinha was part of the club’s major summer clear-out plan.
Rafinha’s brother Thiago could also be coming to England if speculation regarding an ongoing Liverpool interest is to be believed.
The Premier League champions have been credited with a move for the recently crowned Champions League winner but there is yet to be any evidence of the club legitimately making an offer for the Bayern Munich midfielder valued at £29 million.
Bielsa and Jurgen Klopp are among the best coaches in world football which is clearly appealing to a number of Spanish talents as both Alcantara brothers weigh up the possibility of moving to England.
Sport also report that similarly to Bayern’s stance with Liverpool regarding Thiago, Barcelona are determined to hold out for the exact figure that forced Celta Vigo to reconsider their options elsewhere.
What RTK has to say
This certainly is an interest and peculiar subject as it is likely that a move for Rafinha in the Premier League will accelerate Thiago’s determination to also make the move to England.
That isn’t to say that Rafinha would in any way contribute to the possibility of Liverpool signing Thiago more that having your brother alongside you in a new country is likely to make the prospect of moving to the PL or the more appealing.
There is no questioning that Thiago would indeed improve Liverpool ahead of their upcoming title defence but any likelihood of a deal hinges on whether the club are expected to lose any of their current midfield assets.
Reputable Liverpool journalists James Pearce and Melissa Reddy have both claimed that it is unlikely Liverpool will pay close to £30m for a player in an area of the team the Reds already have an array of options in.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s current situation and ongoing interest from Barcelona does add a degree of excitement to the Thiago saga as according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, if Wijnaldum were to leave Liverpool then Klopp will immediately push to secure a deal for Thiago.
If Liverpool will decide to sell Wijnaldum [no clubs agreement yet, waiting for official bid], they’ll push again to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Münich. Contacts still on with his agent. 🔴 #LFC #FCB
