Barcelona remain confident that the signing of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum can be completed this summer, claims Neil Jones of Goal.
The Blaugrana have made the Netherland’s international their top transfer target this summer following the appointment of Ronald Koeman as manager.
Wijnaldum, 29, recently entered into the final year of his Liverpool contract and can begin discussions with other clubs regarding his next footballing destination from January.
The Premier League champions are currently not looking at extending Wijnadlum’s current deal with little developments from a contractual sense.
Liverpool maintain that they are reluctant to lose the former Newcastle United midfielder as a free agent in 2021 amid risk of being backed into a corner the longer developments continue to linger.
No offer has materialised from Barcelona as of yet due to the fact the Catalonia giants need to balance the books by offloading a number of their current players before additional signings can be made.
Ivan Rakitc recently departed the club upon his return to fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla. Arturo Vidal is expected to follow with Inter Milan among the favourites to land the Chilean international.
Luis Suarez is another big earner Barcelona are desperate to move on with the 33-year-old currently in advanced talks to join Seria A champions Juventus.
Wijnaldum recently broke his silence on the matter when questioned on international duty with the Netherlands and the Liverpool man remained reluctant to comment on the speculation that continues to surround him telling reporters: “It’s a rumour, I have nothing to say about it.”
Reports from Spain on Friday morning also claimed that Lyon striker and Wijnaldum’s international teammate Memphis Depay was also on the Barcelona wish list with the duo touted as close to joining the Camp Nou as per ADNL.
Both of the player’s representatives have reportedly spoken with the Spanish side while negotiations were happening in the background with duo currently participating in international duty.
What RTK has to say
This truly is speculation that is becoming increasingly painful to write about as the prospect of Wijnaldum leaving the club seems to become more real by the day.
James Pearce and Simon Hughes of The Athletic recently claimed that there had been previous contractual issues regarding the length of Wijnaldum’s contract extension.
Wijnaldum – who currently earns £75,000-a-week according to Spotrac – reportedly wanted an additional four years put onto his current Liverpool deal but the club were reluctant to accept given the player will turn 30 next year.
Despite reports there is no need, however for immediate panic.
Nothing concrete has developed yet Liverpool could still reach an agreement regarding a new deal in the future. If this were to happen it would undoubtedly represent the biggest win for the club this summer transfer window.
Liverpool have never been in a greater position of strenght so by no means could they condone allowing one of the their best midfielders to leave the club for nothing even if there was a guarantee that Thiago Alcantara were to join the club.
It’s a scenario that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later.
