Sadio Mane has been touted with a move to Barcelona in recent days amid a transfer saga that should raise little concern amongst Liverpool supporters.
Reports from Italy follow a major upheaval at the Catalonia club this summer following the appointment of Ronald Koeman as manager.
Lionel Messi, arguably the game’s greatest ever player has requested a transfer while Barcelona look to offload a number of key assets including Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakatic.
This has prompted links with a number of key personnel at Liverpool including Mane as well as midfield maestro Georginio Wijnaldum who starred for Koeman at international level during the former Netherland head coach’s two-year stint in charge of the national team.
A credible source?
Reports from publication Mundo Deportivo claim that Mane is “open to a change of scenery” before also sparking controversy that the player’s relationship with manager Jurgen Klopp “is not the same as before”.
There are a number of external variables that would make Wijnaldum a credible target for Barcelona given his ongoing contractual situation at Liverpool yet suggestions of the club allowing Mane to leave for a £107m (€120m) reported fee are wide of the mark.
The report originated from Italian outlet TMW (via Sport) and has embellished the story further following claims that Mane would be keen on reuniting with Koeman whom the Liverpool forward spent the 2015/16 campaign with at Southampton.
Nothing to fear
Despite ongoing reports, the likleyhood of Liverpool even condoning the possibility of selling Mane are next to impossible and fans need not worry that the Senegalese ace could indeed leave the club.
Mane, 28, is more than just a key player under Klopp but is the initial catalyst in a series of transfers that sparked a major revival at the club following his arrival in 2016.
Also, considering Mane recently signed a five year contract at Anfield back in 2018 that made him the club’s joint-highest earner (Spotrac) is another factor that questions why a move away from Liverpool just won’t happen.
Liverpool could even be tempted to tie Mane down to another lucrative contract extension as Klopp continues to take precedence on securing the futures of his current Premier League-winners as opposed to splashing out on new recruits in the summer window.
Watford forward and Mane’s international compatriot Ismaila Sarr has been touted with an Anfield move although the 22-year-old’s potential arrival would be seen as potential cover for Mane rather than a direct replacement.
Mane has quickly established himself as one of the finest attacking forwards in world footballl making the notion of Liverpool looking to sell nothing shy of laughable.
