Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has attracted the attention of Ronald Koeman and Barcelona amid reports from Spain – and a number of Kopites have responded on Twitter.
According to Neil Jones of Goal, Koeman is eager to reunite with Wijnaldum whom the former the recently unveiled Barcelona manager worked with during his two-year stint as Netherlands national team head coach.
Despite the Catalonia giants making their interest known, an offer has not been tabled with the Reds at this present moment.
Wijnaldum, 29, recently entered the final year of his Liverpool contract and is open to begin discussions with other teams from January. The Dutchman reportedly is not pushing for a move and remains committed to Liverpool.
The Reds are eager to avoid the possibility of losing another talented midfield option on a free transfer as they did with Emre Can in 2020 although extension talks with Wijnaldum are still yet to take place.
Goal claim Barcelona are aware of the current dynamic at Liverpool and are preparing to formalise their interest in the coming weeks.
In addition, Liverpool maintain that they have no interest in selling Wijnaldum and that both the club and player are focussed on the club’s upcoming title defence as opposed to growing speculation from the media.
Wijnaldum featured more times under Jurgen Klopp last season that any other Liverpool midfielder and has been one of the standard bearers for such relentless consistency en route to the club’s recent Premier League and Champions League success.
The idea of the Netherlands international star leaving the club does not sit well with supporters considering he has been Liverpool’s most consistent midfielder performer over the last four seasons.
Below is what a number of selected Liverpool supporters made of the latest reports from Spain:
I really like Gini not just as a player but also as a person. However, this situation has left a bit of a bad taste for me.

This alone should warrant him being retained
"He played more minutes for the Premier League champions in 2019-20 than any other midfielder at Anfield and was selected to be one of the Reds’ vice-captains behind skipper Jordan Henderson"

It’s clearly better for him to stay where he is. But he needs to sign a contract soon.

How much would we demand for a 30 year old gini
I would say between 20-25 million

Deeply frustrating. Lack of comm to fans is so annoying. We dont know if one our most important players is staying or leaving. To keep and let him go for free is the most ridiculous option. Get something signed preferably or sell.
