Newly promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United are reportedly plotting a surprise bid for former Liverpool star Ryan Kent after the Yorkshire club failed to sign him on a permanent deal last summer.

Kent, 23, is in his third season at Ibrox having clocked up 80 appearances since an initial loan deal from Liverpool to Rangers was agreed in July 2018. During that period he has 16 goals as well as 13 assists under manager Steven Gerrard.

Leeds had previously tried to sign Kent after it was made clear that Liverpool were looking to sell the versatile winger on a permanent basis rather than opt for another loan move. Marcelo Bielsa looked to make a swoop to bring Kent to Elland Road – as per The Scotsman – but instead, he opted to remain with Rangers whom he signed with for a £7 million fee (BBC).

The Scotsman also report that Leeds are looking to try their luck again this time around with a potential £10 million bid as The Whites look to bolster their option ahead of their first English top-flight return since 2004.

Rangers will be desperate to keep hold of one of their star assets who already has two goals to his name this season in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard fought tooth and nail to land Kent from Anfield last summer and it is difficult to imagine the former Liverpool captain will allow Kent to potentially depart the Ibrox without kicking up a fuss.

On numerous occasions, Gerrard has publically showcased his admiration for the former Bristol and Coventry City loanee.

“People don’t give him the credit he deserves, in terms of the amount of running he does for us”, said Gerrard after a crucial Europa League victory against Braga last season.

“But he came big for the team and scored the important goal. Hopefully, this will do his confidence the world of good because there will be times when people aren’t happy with him and it’s a little bit up and down.

“That is part of being a footballer at a top club. But some of the opinions I have been reading of late on Ryan are ludicrous. He’s a top player.”

Leeds have already added Jack Harrison on loan from Manchester City for another season and could look at Kent as another option to add some attacking firepower to Bielsa’s forward unit ahead of the 2020/21 season which begins in September.

Despite the reports, Kent will likely remain at Rangers as the Scottish Premiership runners-up are unlikely to depart with one of their key assets already four matches into the new season.

Kent still remains a largely unproven figure at Ibrox and under Gerrard will feel he is in the perfect environment to take his development to the next level.
