Let’s be honest, the possibility of Liverpool signing World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe this summer were next to be impossible.

If anyone still had any hope of Jurgen Klopp making a shock move for the PSG superstar then Mbappe’s latest comments have all but put an end to the rumours.

The Telegraph reported back in March that Mbappe would be a ‘dream’ signing for Klopp and Liverpool.

Given Liverpool transfer restrictions following the ongoing epidemic and Mbappe’s eye-watering asking price, there never was a chance of a move materialising anyway.

However, Mbappe has now ended any speculation linking him to Merseyside after the France international confirmed he will be staying at PSG for another season.

Speaking with BeIN Sports, he said: “I’m here. I am in the project for a fourth year”.

“The 50th year of the club is an important year for the club, the supporters, everyone, so I will be there no matter what.

“I will try to bring back trophies with the team and give the best of myself.”

Liverpool are reportedly one of four 'offers on the table' for Kylian Mbappe.

Confirming the inevitable

Following on from Klopp’s comments to The Guardian last month that Liverpool were forced to look at internal squad options for next season due to the current financial climate, Mbappe joining the club was just never going to happen.

Liverpool only spend big when the money is available and due to the impact of Covid-19, the Reds will have to be sensible in the market.

The Premier League champions have made just two signings since July 2018 and have spend just £7.25 million on squad additions (Takumi Minamino and Adrian).

Despite this, Liverpool still were able to win the English top-flight in record-time and the Reds will finally be presented with the PL trophy at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Peter Crouch has claimed that Kylian Mbappe 'will want to come to Liverpool'.

Mbappe 2021?

While a move this summer has been ruled out, could Mbappe potentially become a Liverpool player next year?

The 21-year-old had hearts racing over a potential move after he lauded the Reds and their manager Klopp.

“This season, Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League,” he told the Mirror back in May. “They have made winning look easy but the truth is that it is never easy.

“Performances, like they have been having, don’t just happen.

“To be as ruthless as they have been would come from lots of hard work in training and from having a very good manager.”

While we can all dream, the reality is that Mbappe will not be joining Liverpool anytime soon.

The best the Reds can hope for is that Mbappe potentially could run down his PSG contract down before choosing his next destination but even that would seem a long-shot.

Reaction

Nonetheless, Liverpool supporters have given their verdict on the Mbappe rumours and it isn’t surprising to see that not too many are surprised a move for the Frenchman will not materialise this summer.
