Report: Liverpool on red alert as Dayot Upamecano willing to hand in transfer request

Liverpool have been put on red alert after it emerged that Dayot Upamecano is now willing to hand a transfer request to force through a move away from RB Leipzig according to reports.

The 21-year-old powerhouse will have a release clause of £55 million in the summer window and will be allowed to leave Julian Nagelsmann’s team should any club choose to splash out a bid of that size.

According to German newspaper Bild, Upamecano could hand in a transfer request if no-one is able to match Leipzig’s valuation in the summer as the central defender is keen to push through a move.

Liverpool will be in the hunt for a central defender with Dejan Lovren expected to depart the club at the end of the season.

However, Liverpool will have to act fast with their interest that was reported by Italian outlet Passione Inter,as Arsenal, Tottenham, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also keen on the youngster.

Upamecano’s current contract states that the clause drops by £17m each season, making him a more realistic option in the summer window.

Liverpool should be amongst the candidates

With Lovren leaving, Liverpool will already be drawing up candidates for next season.

Virgil van Dijk  and Joe Gomez have established the most formidable central defensive partnership across the Premier League in recent months, although the reality is that in football nothing lasts forever and Liverpool will be looking for the big Dutchman’s successor.

Van Dijk is 28 while Gomez is 22 and the club will have to think about integrating a potential successor to the big Dutchman.

At 21, Upamecano could very-easily be the long-term central defensive partner for Gomez with the two players just a year apart of each other. You can never have too many top-quality centre-backs at one club and the Frenchman would benefit hugely from learning under the tutelage of two of the best in the trade.

Defensive options may not be the main agenda regarding transfer priorities for FSG and Liverpool considering the Reds’ formidable defensive options, however, when a player like Upamecano comes around you certainly have to pay close attention.
