According to reports that TeamTalk, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated his intent to secure the services of Georginio Wijnaldum and offer the Dutchman a new contract with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2021.
Wijnaldum, 29, is one of the key cogs in Liverpool’s midfield and is integral to Klopp’s style of play. The Netherlands international has become the man for the big occasions and has scored some of the Reds’ most important goals under the German manager.
Currently embarking on his fourth season at the club, Wijnaldum has clocked up 177 appearances for Liverpool since signing from Newcastle United in 2016 for a fee of £25 million.
However, his £75,000-a-week contract (Spotrac) is set to expire in just over 12 months time – with the midfielder turning 30 later on this year.
According to reports, Klopp identifies Wijnaldum as one of the club’s primary transfer objectives this summer and has claimed he is ‘desperate’ for the Ballon d’Or nominee to extend his future at the club.
What RTK has to say
Get the deal done at all costs.
Wijnaldum has proven one of Liverpool’s most durable and trusted lieutenants in the previous three years. There shouldn’t be a question of money as the midfielder has proven one of the clubs’ shrewdest acquisitions and has been one of the great bargains of Klopp’s tenure.
Even at 30, Wijnaldum has shown no evidence of slowing down and could have at least another three years in the peak of his career. He provides so much more in midfield than the eye can see and is Liverpool’s man for the big moments.
His elegant frame and low centre of gravity make him a nightmare for opponents to contain and his physicality and stamina showcase a player that isn’t close to deteriorating anytime soon.
Get the deal done Reds.
