Zakaria, 23, has been in excellent form for Gladbach this season. Indeed, the 28-time Switzerland international has clocked up 31 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season – scoring two goals whilst registering the same amount of assists.

Unsurprisingly a player as versatile as Zakaria has other suitors interested outside of Merseyside with Liverpool expected to face plenty of competition from around Europe, including bitter rivals Manchester United.

The former Young Boys star is able to play in central midfield, or at the heart of the defence. Indeed, Zakaria’s adaptability – similarly to James Milner and Fabinho – makes him an excellent option for some of Europe’s biggest clubs with Liverpool amongst some of the continental heavyweights keen.

Jurgen Klopp’s former side Borussia Dortmund have been touted with an interest for Zakaria while Atletico Madrid – who knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League last week – are also interested. United have also been mentioned in the report.

German newspaper BILD previously reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were keen back in October.

Injuries have hindered Liverpool during critical periods of the season and improving the overall depth of the squad has become the priority for Klopp and FSG next season.

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all faced sustained periods on the sidelines and Liverpool cannot afford to allow injuries in key positions to derail their progress next season.

Also, with Dejan Lovren likely to depart in the summer, Zakaria has proven he can also act as adequate cover in central defence and this is something that will certainly Klopp will admire.

According to The Independent, plausibility and cost are the key factors regarding Liverpool’s transfer policies and with a reported fee of £45m, it would certainly tick both boxes for the Reds and FSG to pursue a move for Zakaria.

Following the reports, some Liverpool supporters have taken to Twitter to showcase their delight at the rumours linking the league leaders with one of the most coveted players across Europe.
