Sky Germany have claimed that Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria despite the club prepared to face plenty of competition from around Europe, including bitter rivals Manchester United.
Zakaria, 23, has been in excellent form for the Bundesliga outfit this season. The 28-time Switzerland international has clocked up 31 appearances in all competitions this season – scoring two goals whilst registering the same number of assists.
The former Young Boys star is able to play in central midfield, or at the heart of the defence. Indeed, Zakaria’s versatility makes him an excellent option for the Premier League champions-elect considering the number of injuries that have hindered Liverpool this season.
German newspaper BILD previously reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were interested in Zakaria back in October.
Given that Liverpool have already guaranteed themselves a Champions League place for next season and with the recent doubts regarding the remainder of the season, Jurgen Klopp already has one advantage over the Red Devils in terms of luring Zakaria to Anfield.
Also, Liverpool are likely to lose Dejan Lovren in the summer which would open up two alternate pathways into the Reds’ first-team with the Swiss international able to be utilised in both central midfield as well as defence.
Both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have spent a large extent of time on the treatment table this season which showcases that Klopp is in urgent need of midfield reinforcements if the Reds are to compete on all fronts again next season.
Plausibility and cost have been dubbed by The Independent as the key factors regarding Liverpool’s transfer policies and with a reported fee of £45m, it would certainly tick both boxes for the Reds and FSG.
Liverpool have proven themselves this season as the undisputed kings of England following their dominance in the English top-flight. The Reds are currently a gargantuan 25 points clear at the Premier League summit and in the space of 12 months are likely to have recorded both PL and the Champions League triumphs .
Although United, of course, will tempt any player given the history of the club and the size of the fanbase the reality is that Liverpool’s fierce rivals are currently a million miles away from knocking the Reds from atop of their perch which is why Zakaria would be better off at Anfield.
