Diego Simeone's latest comments could hand Liverpool major advantage

Diego Simeone has revealed to Sky Sports that Alvaro Morata is a major injury doubt for Atletico Madrid’s crunchtime Champions League clash with Liverpool.

Morata, 27, who had started the previous leg, was expected to start at the home of the European champions but is currently nursing an injury that will likely see the former Chelsea star on the sidelines.

Simeone suggested he does want to check on his player’s fitness again before making a final decision but Morata’s involvement tonight is looking increasingly unlikely.

“We will look at him in training and we will see how he is then,” Simeone said.

“You know pretty much what I will be doing. I don’t think our line-up will be far off from what you think it might be.”

What RTK has to say

With Liverpool nursing a few injuries of their own, the Reds will certainly take any boost they can get ahead of their do-or-die European bout.

Alisson Becker has been ruled out with a hip problem while Jordan Henderson could return after sustaining a hamstring injury in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium three weeks ago.

The travelling visitors could be set to lose 11 worth of goals with Morata comfortably Atletico’s top-scorer this season.

Jurgen Klopp has never lost a Champions League match at Anfield so for Atletico to lose a key player ahead of the tie already improves Liverpool’s chances of progressing into the quarter-finals.
