According to the Daily Express, Southampton are plotting a nostalgic return for their forme club-captain Adam Lallana who has emerged as a summer target for the south-coast outfit.
Lallana, 31 graduated through the club’s academy ranks before helping the club progress from League One to the Premier League. The former England international is also on the summer wishlist of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Leicester City.
The former Southampton skipper will become a free agent in the summer once his Anfield contract expires with Lallana unexpected to be offered a new Liverpool deal.
He has been a prominent figure for the Reds over the past six years since his £25million [BBC Sport] move from Southampton. Lallana has clocked up 175 appearances for the Merseyside outfit since joining the club in 2015.
Lallana has spent five-and-a-half years at Liverpool and has scored 22 times and registered the same amount of assists whilst claiming the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup to his impressive CV.
England’s Player of the Year for 2016 has endured a hit-and-miss tenure at Anfield following a spell that has been riddled by injury, and he has become a bit-part player at the club under Jurgen Klopp, starting only three Premier League games this season.
Lallana has shown glimpses of promise and undeniable talent but injury has prevented any significant momentum from materialising. He was been limited to just 25 league appearances between 2017 and 2019.
What RTK has to say
A return to Southampton would could be the perfect reunion for Lallana who would be keen on linking up with a club that shares a similar playing style to the Reds.
Ralph Hassnhuttl similarly to his fellow countryman Klopp likes to utilise the ball and break with speed on the counter-attack which could suit Lallana’s elegant brand of football.
Lallana was with the club from the age of 12 developing through the ranks before inspiring his team from League One to the Championship and then the Premier League.
