According to reports from the Daily Mail, Loris Karius is set to return to Liverpool this summer as Turkish outfit Besiktas do not intend to trigger their option to buy the German goalkeeper once his loan-spell expires in the summer.
Besiktas originally had the option of turning Karius’ loan into a permanent deal this summer for just £7.25m but they are not planning to trigger the clause, according to respected journalist James Pearce.
Karius 26, will now likely return to Anfield in the summer just two years after the shot-stopper was at fault for two goals in Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 2018.
Besiktas paid £2.25m for an initial two-year loan of Karius with an obligation to buy the former Mainz star if Karius met specific performance types.
However, the Turkish giants sit seventh domestically at present and are said to already be planning ahead to next season with Karius unlikely to be included in the picture.
He has clocked up 26 appearances this season across the Turkish League and Europa League but has made high-profile errors – including against Slovan Bratislava in the latter competition in September.
The former Manchester City prospect made 49 appearances for the Reds over a two-year period following a £4.7m [BBC Sport] move from Jurgen Klopp’s former club, Mainz.
Since Karius departed Anfield in 2018 they have since installed Alisson Becker as the club’s No.1 with former West Ham United goalkeeper Adrian now acting as the club’s No.2.
However, Adrian is currently 33 and is reportedly attracting interest regarding a potential return to former club Real Betis. With this in mind, it could open the door for a potential opportunity for Karius to learn under FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year Alisson and attempt to get his career back on track.
Afterall, Karius is only human and although he has proven that he isn’t an adequate option as Liverpool’s long-term first-choice keeper there is no reason that at 26 he cannot learn and improve his game under the tutelage of the best shot-stopper on the planet.
Following the news regarding Karius’ expected return, some Liverpool supporters took to Twitter and showcased an open mind to the possibility of the German keeper potentially being handed a second chance at Anfield.
Here is a selection of some of the responses…
So sad to see his career in rapid fall. Gets unreal hate. His only mistake was making those mistakes in arguable our biggest game in the last decade. Was solid other than that

If Adrian decides to leave at the end of the season. Karius could be a decent number 2. He could learn a lot from Alisson and maybe become the keeper he was at Mainz.

Adrian also conceded a pen in the super cup. Karius won us points away to Everton for fourth that season, made good saves against Roma in the semi’s

Stranger sporting hero stories then Adrian deciding to move on and Karius coming back to save the day in a cup final. In Klopp we trust 😉

With Loris Karius set to return #LFC will still look to offload him this summer.
It is believed that Adrian could be returning to Spain to close out his career, so Liverpool have turned attention to two options as back-up keepers.
Uğurcan Çakır & Timo Horn.
