RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has admitted he is ‘proud’ to be linked with ‘the best team in the world’ Liverpool after scoring the winner against Tottenham Hotspur in north London on Wednesday evening – and many Reds supporters have reacted on Twitter.
According to the Daily Mail, Werner, 23, has been a long-time target of Jurgen Klopp and has been in red-hot form in front of goal this season, clocking up 26 goals in 32 matches in all competitions.
The German international scored the only goal of Leipzig’s Champions League last-16 first-leg clash at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium – a second-half penalty after Ben Davies brought down Konrad Laimer in the box – as Julian Nagelsmann’s side put one foot in the quarter-finals.
Nothing sends supporters into overdrive better than the magic T-word and Werner got Liverpool fans in a meltdown following his comments after Leipzig’s 1-0 victory at Spurs.
Questioned about rumours linking him with a move to Anfield, Werner said: ‘I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world and when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.
‘It’s a pleasure but I know that Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and I need to learn many more things to get to that level and to play there.’
According to the Independent and Melissa Reddy, Liverpool have long assessed a move for Werner who aligns with the stylistic profile the recruitment team prioritise.
Werner has 20 goals in 22 Bundesliga appearances this season – bettered only by Robert Lewandowski – and the player’s skills and attributes would perfectly complement the approach of the European champions, there are concerns over how the German international would adjust to not being an automatic starter at Liverpool.
Liverpool’s irreplaceable attacking trident of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are expected to remain at the club and while sporting director Michael Edwards has begun the process of forward planning for the squad the club are adamant they will not make a long-term decision based on the effects of a short-term external factors such as the Africa Cup of Nations which affects both Mane and Salah’s participation next season.
Following Werner’s comments teasing a potential move to Anfield, many Liverpool supporters took to Twitter to encourage the club to get the man desire to join the home of the Premier League champions-elect.
