Liverpool supporters have called for the Reds to make a move for Kevin de Bruyne following UEFA’s decision to hand Manchester City a two-year ban from competing in European based competitions.

As reported by BBC Sport last night, back-to-back Premier League champions City have been banned from all European club competitions in 2020-21 and 2021-22 after being found to have committed serious breaches of UEFA’s club licensing and financial fair play regulations.

Pep Guardiola’s team have also been handed a €30 million (£25 million) fine with the decision set to be appealed by the Citizens to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

According to Manchester City correspondent for the Athletic, Sam Lee, City are still ‘confident of no ban’ and the club believe that the decision can still be overturned.

The prospect of no Champions League action for two years could test some of the City players’ loyalty to the club and many Liverpool supporters have urged the club to capitalise on their rivals’ shortcomings by attempting to lure Guardiola’s star player Kevin de Bruyne to Anfield.

The 28-year-old Belgium international has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in world football following his move to City in 2015 when he joined from Wolfsburg for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £55m.

De Bruyne has clocked up 205 appearances for City in that period and has scored 48 goals whilst registering 84 assists.

Liverpool fans are eager to see the Belgian powerhouse swap Manchester for Merseyside and immediately expressed their desire on Twitter shortly after the announcement of City’s suspension.
