Liverpool youngster Layton Stewart has signed his first professional contract at the club – and many supporters have reacted on Twitter.

The 17-year-old has progressed through the academy ranks and will now seek to make that next step into the first-team senior set-up.

A squad regular for Barry Lewtas’ U18s set-up, Stewart scored twice in his first start for the young Reds and has clocked up 10 appearances in the U18s Premier League this season – scoring six goals and registering three assists.

Stewart’s most recent appearance for the U18s saw him claim a hat-trick against Sunderland back in January.

He would also go on to play a significant role for Liverpool’s U19 UEFA Youth League squad this campaign, scoring important goals against Napoli and Genk before setting up the winner in Salzburg to secure the team’s spot into the knockout stages of the competition.

The teenager is also a player regularly making the step-up to feature under U23s manager Neil Critchley playing in the EFL Trophy matches against Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley, scoring against the latter.

Stewart was also part of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final squad to face Aston Villa earlier in December. The striker was an unused substitute in the 5-0 defeat but at just 17, he is a player the academy staff certainly have high hopes for.

Following the announcement, many Reds supporters took to Twitter to congratulate the young forward upon his deserved deal and also called for Liverpool to get contract talks underway for Georginio Wijnaldum.
