According to reports from ESPN, Liverpool are set to face competition from Spanish giants Real Madrid for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.
Werner, 23, is one of the most in-demand prospects in world football after taking Europe by storm after clocking up 20 goals in 19 Bundesliga starts whilst also boasting 10 assists in all competitions this season.
The Germany international has caught the attention of the European champions with Jurgen Klopp looking to bring in a new striker at the end of the season. Werner is also attracting interest from Premier League clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea.
Werner was previously touted with a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich last season after entering the final year of his Leipzig contract.
However, Werner instead opted to extend his time at the Red Bull Arena by putting pen-to-paper on a lucrative new deal.
The report states that there are complications to Werner’s new contract with a release clause in the youngster’s agreement that allows him to pursue a move away from Leipzig after four seasons with the club – Werner is currently halfway through his fourth season with the Bundesliga leaders.
ESPN have claimed that it is indeed Liverpool who are the front runners to sign the former Stuttgart forward with Werner interested by the prospect of linking up with countryman Klopp.
Respected journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft has touted the potential deal as the ‘signing of the summer’ should Liverpool get their man.
Timo Werner to Liverpool!!!!!
I can see it happens. Reports in Germany today also support that.
Werner will love to play for Klopp.
This could be best signing of the summer. He scored his 20th goal this weekend. One of the two he scored was a world class volley!!!

But new reports have claimed that the Premier League champions-elect will face competition from their 2018 Champions League final opponents Real Madrid.
Werner had attracted the attention of Los Blancos last summer with the striker identified as a long-term replacement to succeed Karim Benzema but instead opted to sign Luka Jovic. The Serbian forward has disappointed since moving to the Bernabeu in the previous window and could force Zinedine Zidane’s hand in looking elsewhere in the summer.
What RTK has to say
It’s to no surprise that one of the best strikers currently in Europe is subject to interest from some of the continent’s biggest predators.
However, Liverpool are yet to make a signing of Werner’s calibre since bringing Alisson Becker to Anfield in 2018. The German is now a ready-made gamechanger and a player who could rival Roberto Firmino for the No.9 position. Only Robert Lewandowski is operating at the same devastating levels as Werner this season.
If Liverpool are to use their status as world and European champions to their advantage they should do everything in their power to make a statement and bring Werner to Anfield.
