Liverpool are strong favourites when they face lower league Shrewsbury Town on Sunday. They don’t have a great history against teams from lower divisions, however.

Here are nine times that Liverpool lost to lower league teams.

Liverpool 0-1 Blackburn – January 2000, FA Cup Fourth Round

A Nathan Blake goal knocked Liverpool out of the cup as the new century kicked off. Then-First Division Blackburn progressed as Gerard Houllier described things as ‘a huge setback’ for his team.

Liverpool 1-2 (AET) Grimsby Town – October 2001, League Cup Third Round

Liverpool didn’t actually lose a single cup tie between these two games, having won both the FA Cup and League Cup in 2001. But their incredible run bizarrely came to an end against First Division Grimsby Town.

Liverpool 0-2 Crystal Palace – February 2003, FA Cup Fourth Round

The Reds had their first-team out for this but simply could not score, with Michael Owen struggling in particular. Houllier didn’t take the ‘setback’ route this time, though. Instead, he said it could be a ‘blessing in disguise’. He would be kind of right – Liverpool did win the League Cup less than a month later. But they also failed to finish in the top four.

Burnley 1-0 Liverpool – January 2005, FA Cup Third Round

An infamous game as Rafa Benitez’s first FA Cup tie finished in defeat thanks to a comical Djimi Traore own-goal. Admittedly, the embarrassment was forgotten as Liverpool won the Champions League a few months later.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Liverpool – October 2005, League Cup Third Round

The first knockout game since Liverpool won that Champions League ended in defeat to a Championship side. Still, things were once again forgotten as the Reds went on to lift the FA Cup.

Liverpool 1-2 Reading – January 2010, FA Cup Third Round

A bad season and a bad result. Benitez’s time in the FA Cup at Liverpool began with defeat to a Championship side and ended that way, too. He’d be gone at the end of the season – controversially so.

Liverpool 2-2 Northampton Town (2-4 pens) – September 2010, League Cup Third Round

Defeat to a League Two side. Roy Hodgson’s spell in charge at Liverpool was an absolute disaster and yet, somehow, he still had an undoubted low-point. Simply awful from a terrible Reds side.

Oldham Athletic 3-2 Liverpool – January 2013, FA Cup Fourth Round

The last time Liverpool lost to a League One side. Brendan Rodgers’ teams always underperformed in the cups but this was the worst of it.

Liverpool 1-2 Wolves – January 2017, FA Cup Fourth Round

Not even Jurgen Klopp is immune to a lower league defeat. He did take the blame for this one, though. “I am responsible,” he said after the game after putting out a weakened team. “I thought this line-up was ready for this game but obviously we weren’t and that doesn’t feel too good.”
