According to the Mail Online, Liverpool are set to target Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz after seeing a £47 million bid rejected for Real Madrid playmaker Isco.
Jurgen Klopp is suggested to want to add further firepower to his midfield armoury this season with the Premier League champions-elect competing on three separate fronts this campaign.
Spanish publication El Desmarque have reported that Isco was the German’s preferred choice to add some creative spark to Liverpool’s midfield. However, Madrid have proven reluctant to negotiate and with the two parties unable to agree on an acceptable fee, the Reds have chosen to turn their attentions elsewhere.
Napoli midfielder Ruiz is someone who Liverpool feel can fit the bill. The former Real Betis powerhouse has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest talents since leaving La Liga in 2018.
Ruiz has scored once in 18 Serie A games this season and has also won six caps for the Spain national team – and is expected to be part of their Euro 2020 squad this summer.
Liverpool will likely have to pay more than their rejected £47m bid for Isco if they want to land Ruiz. The 23-year-old has got years ahead of him and is one of Napoli’s greatest assets.
Despite this, the Serie A runners-up are seriously struggling in the Italian top-flight and the Reds will be encouraged by their chances of landing Ruiz following a saga of unrest at Napoli between the club’s players and chairman Aurelio de Laurentiis.
Napoli are currently 27 points off of Serie A leaders Juventus and have just one league win in their previous five matches. Their off-field antics have been just as chaotic with several of the first-team squad fined for refusing to attend a training camp arranged by De Laurentiis.
As a result, there is serious unrest and speculation surrounding the Napoli camp with a number of high-profile players expected to leave the club in January or the summer window.
What RTK has to say
A player supporters will very much be aware of following Ruiz’ outstanding display at Anfield in Liverpool’s Champions League Group E stalemate with Napoli in November.
Ruiz has been an ever-present figure for Napoli this season and would represent a shrewd addition to the Liverpool squad.
At 23, Ruiz represents the ilk of player that fits the mould for the future. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum -both 29 – inevitably won’t be around forever and Liverpool need to plan for the seasons ahead if they are to remain successful.
The Spanish international also possesses similar traits to a typical Klopp midfielder. Ruiz is not just fantastic on the ball but is just as effective without it. His ability to hunt down and retrieve possession would see the Napoli man a fine addition to Liverpool’s world-conquering squad.
