According to reports from the Daily Express, Liverpool could have a deal agreed in principle for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner before the summer.

Werner, 23, has been the topic of much speculation this summer window after it appeared that the home of the European champions were the desired destination for the German striker should he decide to leave the Bundesliga.

The report also states that his countryman Jurgen Klopp holds a long-standing interest in the German international. Sky Sports reported earlier this week that Werner will not be leaving Leipzig in the January window but could be open to a move this summer.

Werner is on course to claim his first Bundesliga title with Julian Nagelsmann’s side currently leading the race in the German top-flight. Leipzig also have a Champions League last-16 bout with Tottenham Hotspur to look forward to in a month’s time.

Respected journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft has touted the potential deal as the ‘signing of the summer’ should Liverpool get their man.

The former Stuttgart forward is in scintillating form of late, Werner has 25 goals in 26 appearances this season – 20 of them have come in 18 Bundesliga matches and he also has 10 assists. Only Robert Lewandowski has the same amount of domestic goals in the league this season.

However, transfer expert Ian McGarry has deemed that a fee with Liverpool could be agreed before the summer window opens with Werner potentially following in the footsteps of Naby Keita who also traded Leipzig for Merseyside.

“Werner will not leave Leipzig in this window, he wants to stay and see out the season with the club who leading the Bundesliga at this moment in time and who remain in Champions League contention as well,” McGarry said on the Transfer Daily Podcast.

“However, Liverpool are his preferred destination and indeed Liverpool are in the box-seat to sign him.

“But that would certainly be in the summer window to be completed.

“It’s not ruling out that a fee might be agreed between now and then for the player.

“However, there will be no transfer of Werner until the summer.”

What RTK has to say

This is a transfer saga that will undoubtedly have Kopites excited. Werner is one of the most in-demand players in Europe and yet it has become public knowledge that Liverpool is his favoured destination.

Roberto Firmino is currently 28 and still in the peak years of his career. Werner could help ease the attacking burden on the Brazilian striker with Divock Origi his only cover up-top should the former Hoffenheim striker get injured.

Werner could even play ahead of Firmino with Klopp potentially alternating his tactical system to a 4-2-3-1. Liverpool’s transfer stance could be accelerated with the knowledge that the club will be without Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita ruled out for a sustained period due to Africa Cup of Nations commitments in 2021.
