Report: Daniel Atherton joins Marine on loan

Liverpool goalkeeper Daniel Atherton has joined Northern Premier League North West Division club Marine on loan until the end of the season according to the club’s official website.

Atherton, 20, is a member of Liverpool’s talented U23s squad and will join up Marine until the end of the campaign as the club look to push for promotion.

The teenager has lacked game time following just one start for Neil Critchley’s youth side. Atherton did make his first professional appearance earlier on in the season after playing for 90 minutes in the EFL Trophy defeat to Oldham Athletic in August.

Opportunities have been limited for the youngster with the likes of Alisson Becker, Adrian, Andy Lonergan, Caoimhín Kelleher and Ben Winterbottom all above Atherton in the goalkeeping pecking order.

Atherton is a player who Jurgen Klopp holds in high-esteem with the youngster featuring twice for the senior side in pre-season.

The Liverpool goalkeeper will certainly have benefitted from witnessing the best goalkeeper in the world Alisson in the flesh. Atherton has linked up with the first-team on numerous occasions following call-ups to the senior training set-up.

He will now be playing in England’s seventh tier with his new club Marine just five points off of top-spot Workington AFC.
