Liverpool’s pursuit of perfection is beginning to reach devestating pace as the runaway Premier League leaders extended their lead at the league summit to 13 points following their 19th win of the campaign at Anfield against Sheffield United.

Jurgen Klopp’s team made Premier League history on Thursday evening after their 2-0 victory against Chris Wilder’s Blades ensured that the Reds have now gone a full calendar year without defeat. They are currently embarking on a 37-match unbeaten run and are closing in on the English record (49) currently held by Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’.

The midweek victory also saw the European champions record their fifth consecutive league clean sheet with defensive duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both dominating the plaudits as Liverpool extended their unbeaten league run at Anfield to 51 matches.

Van Dijk, 27, and Gomez, 22, were at their irresistible best following their fifth consecutive league start as a pairing. The central defensive duo recorded a combined 254 completed passes between each other – 12 more than the entire Sheffield United team.

Gomez, in particular, has been praised for his influence in shutting up shop at the back following injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip. The England international has been absent in 12 league matches this season and in that period, Liverpool have only registered two clean sheets and have conceded 13 goals.

Meanwhile, when Gomez has been present in the six matches alongside the UEFA Player of the Year Van Dijk, Liverpool have conceded just one goal whilst boasting five clean sheets.

The former Charlton Athletic defender is in the form of his life in a Reds shirt and his performances are not going unnoticed with many Liverpool supporters taking to Twitter to speak of their admiration for the £3.5 million defender.
