According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Liverpool could miss out on Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski with the Serie A star set to sign a lucrative new contract amid reported interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.
Zielinski, 25, has made 164 appearances for the Serie A runners-up – scoring 21 times in the process. The former Udinese powerhouse has proven an indispensable member for both club and country. He has 51 caps for the Poland national team.
The Pole has demonstrated his qualities in numerous clashes with the Reds over the last two seasons. Zielinski made a late cameo in the 2-0 victory against Jurgen Klopp’s side in September and played 85 minutes in the 1-1 stalemate at Anfield.
La Republica recently claimed that contact had been made between Liverpool and the Italian giants with Everton also a long-term admirer. The Express have reported that Zielinski has a release clause in his current contract of £60 million.
There could be further complications to Liverpool negotiating a deal following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti from Napoli. The three-time Champions League-winning manager is expected to be unveiled as the new Everton boss and this could tempt Zielinski away from Anfield.
What RTK has to say
Klopp has expressed in the past he is an admirer of Zielinski. The FIFA Coach of the Year has seen plenty of auditions from the former FC Empoli midfielder over the years and similarly to Takumi Minamino, this could tempt Klopp to make a move.
However, having already secured Minamino for a bargain fee of just £7.25 million, Liverpool may feel their midfielder reinforcements are adequate enough for the time being.
Despite current injuries to Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldumm, the Reds’ midfield depth certainly isn’t lacking.
Having already seen a managerial change this season, Napoli will not look to be offloading players at the halfway mark of the season meaning Liverpool will likely miss out this time around.
