Roberto Firmino came off the bench to convert the winner against Monterrey in stoppage time to set up a clash with his Brazilian counterparts Flamengo at the weekend.
Jurgen Klopp made five changes to the defeat at Watford with the most noticeable alteration seeing Virgil van Dijk miss the match through illness with club-captain Jordan Henderson covering at centre-back.
The victory means Liverpool will take part in their first CWC final since 2005 and will also present the Reds with the opportunity to avenge the 1981 final defeat to Saturday’s opponents Flamengo.
Liverpool have a tendency to put their supporters through the emotional wringer and Wednesday’s semi-final was no difference as the European champions gave supporters a huge dose of relief with yet another late winner.
Defeat was unthinkable for the Reds who are looking to claim the only trophy left in club football that hasn’t decorated the Anfield trophy hall. Following the win, many supporters took to Twitter to express their delight after the sparkling celebrations in Qatar.
