Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has slammed Premier League referee Martin Atkinson following his decision to strip Roberto Firmino of a perfectly legal goal.

Atkinson, 48, controversially ruled out the Brazilian’s equaliser against Aston Villa after he deemed the Reds forward offside whilst working in VAR headquarters.

The reason behind the ludicrous call was that apparently Firmino’s “armpit” was in an offside position after Sadio Mane had found his teammate with a perfectly timed cross. Thankfully for Jurgen Klopp and his team, Atkinson’s latest saga didn’t cost the Reds maximum points on this occasion.

A statement from the Premier League followed stating: “Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino was flagged offside before putting the ball in the net against Aston Villa and the decision was confirmed by VAR

“The red line signifies Firmino and was aligned to his armpit, which was marginally ahead of the last Villa defender”

Atkinson has remained a consistently unpopular figure amongst Liverpool supporters – most recently following his catastrophic refereeing performance against Manchester United.

Former Reds striker and cult hero Fowler labelled the decision as ‘ridiculous’ but later admitted that he wasn’t surprised by the call after he had learned of the man responsible for denying the European champions a perfectly legal goal.

One supporter argued that the decision was incorrect because it was part of Firmino’s arm playing him offside.

Many Liverpool fans are sensing somewhat of a conspiracy between Atkinson and Kopites.

Another fan even compared Atkinson to Howard Webb.

Atkinson’s shortcomings against Liverpool have caused ‘career suicide’ according to one LFC supporter.
