It is no secret that Liverpool are admirers of Sandro Tonali. The Italian play-maker has been dubbed the ‘the next Pirlo’ by the press. Playing his football at Brescia in Serie A, the 19-year-old already has 55 first-team appearances. Bookies have Brescia as favourites for relegation. If Brescia go down, a Liverpool bid for Sandro Tonali could finally replace Xabi Alonso.
Liverpool were dealt a blow in May when Goal reported that Brescia president Massimo Cellino would refuse to sell Tonali. The prodigy has already been called up to the Italian senior team by boss Roberto Mancini. His pedigree is undeniable, with Europe’s top clubs chasing him.
Sandro Tonali could fill a gap left in Liverpool’s midfield by Xabi Alonso. The Reds sold the Spaniard a decade ago. Yet it has been quite some time since his departure, Liverpool have never replaced the Spanish play-maker. A cult hero, Alonso wowed Anfield with his range of passing.
To finally replace Alonso would be a massive step forward for Liverpool. Tonali promises to fill Alonso’s boots and then some. The Italian wonder-kid has Alonso’s vision and Javier Mascherano’s steel. To combine the two members of Liverpool’s best defensive midfield partnership would be incredible.
Tonali would have the perfect role model in Fabinho. The Brazilian half-back has shown a defensive 6th sense and an eye for a pass since cementing his place. Under Fabinho’s tutelage, Tonali could become a world class midfielder for Liverpool.
