Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has told ESPN that he’s not worried about the way the Reds have been playing in pre-season.
He said: “I’ve been part of a Liverpool defence that was rock solid as well but in pre-season we were letting goals in for fun.
“So the only thing I will tell you is that the difference between a pre-season game and a proper game is you’re completely switched on, you do a lot of things automatically.”
Jurgen Klopp will be hoping Nicol’s prophecy will come true when they kick the season off with a curtain raiser at Wembley against Manchester City next weekend.
The Reds have only just welcomed back Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker from their summer breaks while Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri are back from respective injuries.
Liverpool have yet to field a pre-season side anywhere close to their strongest XI so to judge them based off of what has happened on the pitch this summer is not fair.
There are still two weeks to go until the Premier League season begins so the Reds will have a chance to improve their fitness and get their football up to scratch.
They will once again be aiming to overcome Manchester City after they beat the Anfield outfit to the league title last season and had to settle for a sixth European Cup.
