Jurgen Klopp told his press conference on Sunday that he would prefer to lose in pre-season and find solutions to his side’s issues than run into problems once the season starts.
The Reds slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Napoli in Scotland, making it four friendlies in a row without a win with their last win coming against Bradford City two weeks ago.
Liverpool have one more friendly before they face Manchester City in the FA Community Shield which will be followed by the Premier League opener against Norwich City and their UEFA Super Cup tie with Chelsea.
Klopp said: “I think the worst thing that could have happened is if we had won all the games without the six players then everybody would be flying from last year and into the new season, then getting the problems in the season.
“That would have been the worst thing. For the first time since the Champions League final we have 99 per cent of the squad tomorrow, only Sadio is missing then, and that’s the moment where we really start talking and preparing a couple of things and then we have to go again.”
Sadio Mane will return to the squad a lot later than his other teammates after he helped guide his Senegal side to the final of the AFCON but Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino will return to training today.
Having those three players will be huge given how influential they were last season as the Anfield outfit romped its way to 97 points in the Premier League and to a sixth European Cup.
The Reds were incredible last season but that came off the back of a brilliant pre-season but now with six players only able to enjoy two weeks’ worth of preparation, they might make a slow start to the new campaign.
Klopp and his coaching staff will be working through the issues Liverpool have experienced this summer and will be hoping to resolve any major problems before the 9th of August.
