Joel Matip has told Liverpoolfc.com that despite the Reds’ need to improve, they are feeling confident ahead of the new Premier League season.
He commented on the US tour, saying:”It was an intense period with good opponents and we worked hard to get a better fitness level and to get back in the mood.
“We still have a lot of work to do and we are working hard. I’m looking forward and we are confident. We know it’s a long way to go and we still have a lot to improve, but we’re on a good way.”
The Cameroonian is looking to pick up from where he left off last season as he proved to Liverpool fans and the whole of Europe that he’s good enough to start alongside Virgil van Dijk.
His strongest performance came against Barcelona when he helped keep Luis Suarez quiet for the second leg of the Champions League semifinal before he dominated in the final.
Spurs might not have scored against Liverpool in the Wanda Metropolitano or even threatened to for that matter but that was due to the fact that Matip and Van Dijk were imperious in their defending.
Not to mention the assist Matip gave to Divock Origi to score the second goal in the 85th minute after a frantic fight for possession in Tottenham’s box.
The former Schalke defender is known for his marauding runs from the back and his brilliant passing to break the lines from deep and with an important season ahead, it looks as though Klopp is counting on him to flourish again.
