Joel Matip told LFCTV that he wants to add more goals to his game as he eyes more improvement in the 2019/20 season.
“Hopefully,” he replied when asked if he is keen to add more goals for the Reds. “It’s getting closer.
“When I’m in the front and when I have the chances I want to use it.”
Matip scored just one goal last season with a headered strike against Southampton at Anfield but given the Cameroonian’s huge 6 foot 5 frame, he ought to be scoring at least five goals per season.
If the former Schalke man can reach that figure, he’ll receive a lot more credit and recognition for his defensive displays from the wider football community as a result.
Van Dijk scored seven goals last season for Liverpool and while he was also unbelievably good in his defensive duties, scoring goals helped further raise his profile.
The Dutchman’s headered goal against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League showed Europe that he isn’t just a top-class defender but also a threat in his opponents’ box.
That’s the next step for Matip. If he can score more goals, not only will he help aid his side’s push for more silverware but he will enhance his own reputation and ensure he keeps his place in the side ahead of Joe Gomez.
There is fierce competition for starting spots this season and Matip needs to make sure he keeps his performance levels high otherwise he might get displaced by Gomez.
