Liverpool can take a closer look at Bruno Fernandes when they face Sporting Lisbon in New York this evening.
In June, Correio de Manha reported that Liverpool were interested in the Portugal international and that if they were to bid, it would ‘change everything.’
That bid seemingly never arrived but if Klopp still wants the midfielder he can get a closer look at Fernandes this evening when his side face Sporting Lisbon in New York.
The 24-year-old enjoyed his best season to date in 2018/19 as he scored 25 times and assisted 13 goals. There isn’t a midfielder at Liverpool that came anywhere near that kind of output and while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are quality players, they simply can’t match that kind of output.
Of course, Fernandes was playing in Liga Nos which isn’t on the same level as the Premier League so this evening’s pre-season friendly at the Yankee Stadium will offer Klopp a chance to have a closer look.
He would cost more than £56million, Sporting president Frederico Varandas told RTP which might be a lot for someone yet to prove himself in one of Europe’s Top 5 Leagues but he showed during Portugal’s successful UEFA Nations League tournament that he is following in Bernardo Silva’s footsteps and will soon be a top-class player.
The friendly against Sporting might not be the best way to measure Fernandes’ suitability to Liverpool but Klopp will already have reports from scouts on that but it will instead allow the German to see for himself what kind of player £56m+ would get him.
Klopp hinted to the Liverpool Echo that he is looking closely at making a signing and if Fernandes is in fact a player he’s tracking, tonight could be a decisive point in the decision making over a move for the Portuguese.
If Klopp does decide to sign Fernandes, he will need to act quickly given that the new Premier League season starts soon and with comes the close of the English transfer window.
