Clinton Morrison told talkSPORT that James Milner deserves a new contract after the midfielder admitted he is yet to open talks with the club over a new deal.

The 33-year-old told the Telegraph: “As it stands, last year we spoke to the club and asked them if they wanted to do something and they said not at that time. We haven’t heard anything since so that’s where we are at.”

Since joining Liverpool for free in 2015, Milner has been outstanding deserves a new deal and former Crystal Palace forward Morrison has explained why to talkSPORT.

He said: “It’s a strange decision and I don’t agree with it. When you get to a certain age, if you’re still delivering on a regular basis then you’re entitled to earn that contract.

“Is he one of the fittest at Liverpool? I can guarantee you in all the testing, James Milner will win everything when it comes to weights, running and covering the miles on the pitch. I bet if you speak to Jurgen Klopp, he would say get the deal done as a soon as possible, it’s the hierarchy.”

Klopp has recently praised the midfielder for youthfulness despite his age and given the way he was selected in key European games last season, there is no doubt he is highly rated by the German manager.

Liverpool will once again be in the thick of things in both the Premier League and the Champions League as they look to overcome Manchester City to be declared Champions of England while they will most certainly look to retain their European crown.

Milner’s experience and unbelievable fitness will once again be key as the Reds aim to start the new season in fine fashion as they face Man City in the FA Community Shield, Norwich in the league and Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup all in the space of 10 days.

Whether or not the reason Milner hasn’t been offered a new contract has to do with the club’s owners is not guaranteed but there is no questioning the fact that he deserves an extension.

It definitely won’t be a case of wanting more money but Milner will want to stay at the club as long as he can.
