Liverpool’s £75million deal for Virgil van Dijk is made to seem all the more impressive by Manchester United’s proposed £80m for Harry Maguire.

The Reds’ eternal rivals seem destined to complete their own world record to sign Maguire with an incredible £80million fee being mooted by the British press.

The Englishman is a fine defender and is certainly an upgrade on the likes of Chris Smalling but there is no way he is worth that kind of money even if Leicester City are justified to ask for as much as they want for one of their best players.

When Fenway Sports Group sanctioned a deal to sign van Dijk last year, the footballing word reacted with outrage declaring that there was no way a defender could be worth £75m.

Since then, however, he has transformed a previously defensive weak side into the stingiest Premier League defence with help from the brilliant Alisson and the composed Fabinho.

United are eyeing a move for Maguire to see a similar transformation of their defence which the Reds witnessed after the purchase of van Dijk.

Liverpool won the Champions League thanks to van Dijk’s dominance at the back and if they are to go on to win the Premier League this season, there is no doubt that the Dutchman will be a key figure in that success.

His composure, reading of the game and unparelled aerial dominance have seen him overtaken the likes of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane as the best defender in the world.

The mere fact that he hasn’t been dribbled past in over a year speaks volumes about his talent for defending.
