Jordan Henderson told the media that he wants Jurgen Klopp to stay at Liverpool for “a very long time” after the pair won the Champions League together.
There is a lot of emotional backstory to the image below as it was both the culmination of an incredible career transformation and the result of a long hard journey Henderson and his formerly cancer-stricken father had toiled with.
As ever, however, Klopp played a vital role in this story as he provided the all-important father figure for his skipper while his father was going through cancer treatment.
Klopp is an important person in Henderson’s life and not just because of his football ties to the German but because the manager is such a terrific person on and off the pitch.
Henderson reportedly told the media that he wants Klopp to stay at the club for “a very long time” which the boss responded to by promising that he will be at the club for at least another three years, with his contract expiring in 2020.
Klopp is easily the most important person at the football club as players come and go and while Salah and van Dijk might be generational talents, someone of Klopp’s personality and suitability to the city of Liverpool isn’t exactly a dime a dozen.
Winning the Champions League might be the first piece of silverware that the former Borussia Dortmund head coach has won at Anfield despite appearing in a few cup finals since 2015 but the job he has done in the space of a few short years is something no other manager in the world could have done.
He might have spent a lot of money on players but he had to sell in order to be granted that transfer budget, with Philippe Coutinho’s £142m move to Barcelona funding big-money moves for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
Hopefully, Klopp extends his stay at Liverpool beyond the remaining three years on his contract but if he doesn’t, you better enjoy the next few seasons as you’ll never see anything like it ever again.
