Duncan Castles told the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast that Lille believe Liverpool will only make a move for Nicolas Pepe if they sell this summer.
Last season, Salah scored another 31 goals for Liverpool and provided 12 assists, taking his overall goal contribution for the Reds to 100 goals and assists in 101 games.
The Egyptian has been a global icon in the game and is arguably the best player at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal.
Speaking on the Transfer Talk podcast, Castles said: “There is a long-standing interest in Nicolas Pepe at Lille. They have talked to the player’s agent about a move.
“The feeling at Lille its that [a] deal will only happen if Liverpool sell one of their top strikers – and at Lille they believe that the possibility is that Mo Salah will move down the line and that Nicolas Pepe has been identified as a replacement there.
“There are obviously limitations on Liverpool from a financial perspective in that they have spent heavily on players in recent seasons, breaking transfer records on multiple occasions.”
Pepe is a fine player and has the potential to blossom into a truly remarkable talent but there is no point arguing that he’s better than Salah, who the Reds must hold onto until he shows signs of losing his mercurial talents.
The former AS Roma star is absolutely vital to the Reds chances of winning the Premier League for the first time in the club’s illustrious history as his unbelievable goalscoring talents are relied on by Klopp.
He has been the highest-scoring player not only at Liverpool but in the Premier League and if it weren’t for Lionel Messi, he would have the highest number of goal involvements in Europe over the last two seasons.
