Liverpool would be favourites to win the Premier League title this season if they signed Matthijs de Ligt and Philippe Coutinho, Steve Nicol told ESPN.

Despite the start of the Premier League starting in three weeks on Friday, Liverpool are yet to announce a major signing and look set to go into the new signing without adding to their squad.

This has rattled a large number of supporters on social media as they believe adding one or two more players this summer is imperative to the success of the coming season.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Steve Nicol declared that if Liverpool signed de Ligt and Coutinho they would be favourites to win the Premier League this summer.

He said: “If Liverpool added De Ligt and Coutinho then I would have them as favourites to win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City next season.

“One of the reasons why City beat Liverpool to the title last season was because they had more goal scorers. Now, if they added a goal scorer in Coutinho and one in De Ligt who is a threat from set-pieces, that could change things. Getting those two could make up that one point difference.”

Coutinho would cost £88million this summer, as per Calciomercato, and is a player that is potentially attainable but on the other hand, Matthijs de Ligt is closing in on a £67.5million move to Juventus, BBC Sport claims.

While it would be a dream scenario to see the Reds spend what would be around £155million on Coutinho and de Ligt, it seems as though Klopp has internal solutions to the problems that those two would solve.

Coutinho would provide more creativity and a goalscoring threat from midfield but with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set to be involved a lot more this season, it seems as though Klopp will favour them as opposed to spending close to £90m on a player that dropped the Reds almost two years ago.

De Ligt is undoubtedly the most exciting centre back in the world as he could quite easily go down as the greatest player in his position of all time when he eventually retires in 15 years’ time but Liverpool have Joe Gomez who will one day be world class and Klopp looks set to give him another chance this season.
